About the course

This course has been written to develop the learner’s knowledge and awareness of dementia. For those working in social care settings this can be vital knowledge. The course is aimed at learners in school or college, those working for local authorities or private commercial homeowners.

Learners will work toward developing an understanding and awareness of the causes and symptoms of dementia. This allows for progression to the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care. It may also assist learners into progressing into employment in social care settings.

This is a knowledge only qualification; therefore, work experience is not mandatory. To gain this qualification, learners must achieve the four mandatory units.

Unit 1

This unit provides you with the knowledge you need on the neurology of dementia. This includes the causes of dementia and the reasons they require the support they do. People with dementia will have many different difficulties and needs. This unit will help you develop a better understanding of these.
Age is one of the major risk factors in developing dementia. With an ageing population, the number of people diagnosed every year is getting higher.

Unit 2

Administrating medicines correctly is always important. Yet it is particularly important for people dealing with dementia. When looking at administering medicines it is important to try and keep a balance between choice and risk. When dealing with people suffering from dementia, it is important to offer support to allow them to manage their own medication safely.

Although currently there is no medication available that cures dementia, there is medication that can help control the symptoms. By controlling the symptoms people can be ensured a higher quality of life. For a long time, there has been medication available to sedate people with dementia; but recently the use of antipsychotic drugs under extensive reviews. The new position of the UK governments is to promote a reduction in their use.

Unit 3

Dealing with dementia can leave a person feeling isolated and alone. Communication can be very difficult for dementia sufferers. If it feels like it is becoming too hard, many give up trying to communicate all together.

There are many different forms of communication. Not all of them will work for dementia sufferers. Care/Support workers must try to assess communication methods from the point of view of someone who has dementia. Communication is not limited to verbal. Communication can be demonstrated via behaviour and other options.

This is the most important unit. This unit underpins everything else you will learn. Communication is the most important aspect of supporting a dementia sufferer.

Unit 4

It is important to ensure that anybody that accesses services is treated fairly. It can be difficult to know how to include people with dementia. People find it easier to ignore them or not try to include them. Many people do not understand the needs of a dementia patient and how to make sure that person is included in all aspects of life.

Anti-discriminatory practice and valuing differences is essential for good care. This means learning to grasp that people with dementia have different needs. Care and support workers need to understand how to respond to people as individuals and how to put them at the centre of planning delivery of support.
