This course is designed for care workers who are come into contact with individuals who suffer from diabetes as part of their work (e.g. care workers, health and social care support workers, individuals who suffer from diabetes).

Course Description

This course is designed for care workers who, as part of their job role, come into contact with individuals suffering from diabetes. This online course will enhance knowledge and understanding in the field of diabetes in relation to:

  • Signs and causes of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
  • Differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
  • Symptoms and diagnosis of diabetes
  • Range of treatments
  • Monitoring of the diabetic condition
  • Understanding the major complications of uncontrolled diabetes
  • Healthy lifestyle management

The course provides an introductory overview to diabetes. It focuses on the person with diabetes and how they can make informed choices in relation to treatment and lifestyle.

The course will appeal to individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including people with diabetes, health care workers and anyone interested in learning more about the condition.

To further embed this new and often complex learning BYTSYZ has included a number of care related exercises to encourage:

  • Liaison with managers and senior carers to engage with issues at the local level, such as the content and location of local policies and procedures
  • The contextualisation of learning
  • Consolidation of learning

  • Explain the types of diabetes and the signs and causes of Hypoglycaemia and Hyperglycaemia
  • Explain the causes of type 1 diabetes and the factors that can predispose to type 2 diabetes
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of diabetes and the range of diabetic treatments available
  • Explain the importance of monitoring diabetes and the role of diet controlling its progression
  • Explain the range of risk factors and major complications associated with diabetes
  • Explain the importance of a lifestyle to promote the health of a diabetic sufferer
